A helping hand for academic achievement in Mayan communities

A donation of a school bus for the students of Pac Chen.

15 September, 2017

Thanks to all the money raised by ALLTOURNATIVE Mayathlon 2017 – an off-road triathalon in support of extending the reach of education – an Urvan minibus has been presented to the Mayan community of Pac Chen. The minibus will provide 25 students with safe transportation to their nearest education centre, which is located in the town of Tres Reyes.

Students based in rural communities like Pac Chen must walk on average 7 kilometres each day, in order to reach the secondary and preparatory schools in Tres Reyes. Lack of transport is the principal cause of  the high dropout rates and low education level that has is common in Mayan rural communites.

“One of the things that inspired me most 18 years ago was the children.  Even though there was a great deal of poverty back then, they were always smiling and had incredible energy. Today, we are filled with joy and pride at being able to present this donation, which strengthens our bonds with the community of Pac Chen, and with Tres Reyes and the surrounding areas”, commented Carlos Marin, the director of ALLTOURNATIVE, before thanking all the sponsors, triathletes, businesses and collaborators that made possible March’s Mayathlon.

ALLTOURNATIVE, in its capacity as an ecotourism business with strong links to the Mayan communities, is helping to raise the average academic level from three years of primary school to three years of secondary school. Thanks to the money raised by Mayathlon, the inhabitants have been provided with a classroom, a home for the rural teacher, a sports field, and now two vehicles for transport to school. Tbe  new unit, which will encourage students to finish the last two years of secondary school, will be managed cooperatively by the students’ parents and money for petrol will be provided by us, ALLTOURNATIVE; therefore, the rural families will not incur any extra cost.

Josue Poot, a student and youth triathlete from Pac Chen, will be one of the many beneficiaries of the communal vehicle: “Thank you for making possible the donation of this school bus. I had the chance to run in the fifth annual Mayathlon and it was a great experience. We’d like to invite you all to compete in the next race, on 18th March 2018, we’d be delighted to have you here”.
