AwardsAwards and Certifications2007: ENTREPRENEURIAL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYThe Entrepreneurial Social Responsibility (RSE) today represents an added value and a competitive advantage for the company, insofar as tomorrow it will be a requirement. Those companies that from today incorporate or strengthen their RSE actions will do it at their own rhythm and according to their possibilities, giving them a permanent competitive advantage. The RSE offers the company real and tangible benefits which can be measured in various ways, basing it on either quantitative or qualitative information.
A Socially Responsible Company is that which bases its vision and commitment on policies, programs, decision-making and actions that benefit its business and that have a positive impact on people, the environment and the communities where they operate which are above and beyond their obligations and which respond to the expectations of all the participants: investors, collaborators, management, competitors, suppliers, clients, government, social organizations and the community.
Since Alltournative’s beginnings, its mission and vision have gone hand in hand with the Code of Social Responsibility. Because of this, Alltournative was distinguished as a Socially Responsible Company in February, 2007. This distinction is awarded by CEMEFI (Mexican Philanthropic Center) and alia RSE.
2006: DISTINTIVO "M"The Distintivo M is a recognition awarded by the Mexican Secretary of Tourism. It is mainly directed towards improving and resolving four basic aspects of the company’s operation:
- The Procedural System: Implement systems that allow companies a clear direction and ample knowledge of their clients’ expectations. Promote an adequate planning and the definition of clear objectives for all those who work in the company.
- Processes: Apply an adequate methodology to resolve the operational problems to make the company’s processes clear an favoring integration and avoid waste.
- Human Development: Create the necessary conditions for the personnel to free their potential and make significant contributions, encouraging the company to reach and maintain its level of competitiveness.
- Information and Diagnostic System: Develop a system that permits knowledge of its surroundings and inner workings by constructing indicators that serve as guides and align the different measurements of each area in order to integrate them into an information system. With this instrument, the entrepreneur can make appropriate, timely decisions and establish company policies or directives.
This award was given to Alltournative for having successfully implemented the systems suggested by the Secretary of Tourism.
2006: FINALIST ENDEAVOR LATIN AMERICAAwarded to Alltournative’s CEO, Carlos Marín, by the international Endeavor organization for exceptional entrepreneurial development during the last 7 years.
Endeavor is a non-profit organization that searches for entrepreneurs who are leaders of innovative companies with high potential for development. They then help them turn their business ideas into a success story and a role model for others, providing knowledge and access through a network of volunteer experts and investors.
The search for entrepreneurs who can become candidates for the international selection panel is done twice a year. Once a possible candidate is found, there is a rigorous process of entrepreneurial analysis which is later presented to a jury or international selection panel. Professionals from the United States and from the country of origin evaluate the candidates to help find those entrepreneurs who can become truly successful role models in their countries.
The entrepreneurs selected by Endeavor agree to a work plan for 12 to 18 months with the main growth challenges of their companies. The Entrepreneurial Service area connects the entrepreneur with the available resources in the network according to the concrete requirements presented. The help can include everything from the formulation of a strategic plan, the incorporation of a MBA from a United States or local university to work in the company for three months, to establishing commercial contacts or supplying consultants for administrative procedures. Carlos Marin was named and chosen for his successful project called “Maya Encounter”, a model of sustainable development with which he brings tourism to a total of 3 Maya communities for adventure activities such as rappel, zip-line, jungle walking and canoeing, and to see and experience live Maya culture up close.
Since Alltournative began its operation in 1999, it has created a total of 90 jobs as guides and photographers for the inhabitants of the communities, of which a total of 200 people have benefited due to a rotation system. Thanks to this job creation, the migration towards the large tourist developments has fallen to almost 0%, thus preventing disintegration of the family and the loss of traditions and customs. They have also managed to make agreements to cease logging and hunting in order to preserve the region’s endemic flora and fauna.
2005: FINALIST ENDEAVOR MEXICOAwarded to Carlos Marin for his development as an entrepreneur during the last 6 years by the Mexican Chapter of Endeavor. Endeavor is a non profit organization that searches for possible entrepreneurs who are leaders of innovative companies with high potential for development. They then help them turn their business ideas into a success story and a role model for others, providing knowledge and access to a network of volunteer experts and investors.
The assistance can include anything from the formulation of a strategic plan, the incorporation of an MBA from a Mexican or American University to work in their company for three months, to establishing commercial contacts or supplying consultants for administrative procedures.
2005: TOP 10 ENTREPRENEURS IN MEXICOAwarded by Grupo Expansión for the entrepreneurial development achieved during the last 5 years. Grupo Editorial Expansión is today the most important publishing house for a selective business audience in Mexico. Its monthly publications reach more than 5.3 million readers.
This award was given to Carlos Marin for his model of sustainable development in the Pac-Chén community. The project actively helps the region’s economic development thanks to job creation in the communities involved with Alltournative.
2005: SECOND PLACE FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE REGIONThe SAGARPA (Secretary of Agriculture, Cattle, Rural Development, Fishing and Nutrition) awards this prize to recognize and motivate the preservation of the identity and the traditions of the indigenous communities. The object of this award is to recognize the effort of the indigenous people who strive daily to ensure their own development under marginalized circumstances and conditions.
The second place in this regional contest was awarded to the Pac-Chén project which is based on sustainable ecotourism as an alternative form of subsistence, given the adverse conditions of the land for farming. The community’s inhabitants, with the support of Alltournative, have managed to responsibly exploit the natural beauties through adventure activities. The quality of life has improved considerably with the tourist project, and the migration of young people to the large tourist developments has been reduced to almost 0%. Thanks to the project, the inhabitants have promised to cease hunting and logging on their land, thus helping preserve the region’s flora and fauna.
2005: FINALIST NEW VENTURESNew Ventures is the first program in Mexico geared towards accelerating the growth of sustainable companies that generate elevated economic, environmental and social values in the country. New Venture’s mission is to strategically contribute to sustainable businesses that offer an innovative solution to the country’s environmental and social challenges.
Every year, New Ventures Mexico, with two selection panels, chooses a group of companies to participate in the Acceleration Program. Each of these panels is a jury composed of renowned entrepreneurs and environmental experts who evaluate the companies according to their growth potential, viability for obtaining investment and their environmental and social impact.
Alltournative was nominated for their sustainable tourism development in the Mayan communities of Pac-Chén and Tres Reyes, where they offer mainly foreign tourists the opportunity to responsibly explore the jungle and experience the daily life of the Maya communities.
2004: OUTSTANDING MEXICAN ACHIEVERS AWARDAwarded by the “Vuelo” magazine and the Grupo Expansión for the Pac-Chén community tourist development. Grupo Editorial Expansión is today the most important publishing house for selective audiences and businesses in Mexico. Their monthly publications reach 5.3 million readers.
Carlos Marín, general director of Alltournative, and Otto von Bertrab, expedition director, were recognized as Outstanding Mexicans since together they developed Encuentro Maya (Maya Encounter). This is a unique and very favorable model of sustainable development since it has three simultaneous benefits:
- Economic utility for the company.
- Conservation of the environment.
- Economic development and cultural preservation for the local population.
Today, three communities and 200 collaborators and their families have directly benefited. In addition to improving their economic level, they are re-evaluating their cultural roots and preserving the environment, since they have entered into an agreement with Alltournative to not log or hunt in the ejidos where the activities take place.
2003: GOLD MEDAL: INTERNATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARDAwarded in London England, by the important English tour operator Thomson Holidays, for the Jungle Crossing expedition. This award recognizes the commitment to the environment and the sustainable development in Rancho San Felipe, the community where this sea and land expedition takes place.
This commitment to the environment is reflected in the protection of the Cenotes and the second largest reef in the world, the Great Mayan Reef, which is in front of the Quintana Roo. coast.
Alltournative actively participates in environmental protection through a series of measures that try to keep human impact to a minimum, such as, for example, not allowing the visitors to these natural wonders to use sun blocks or insect repellents, even when these are biodegradable or water proof.
Another measure is the installation and promotion of the use of dry toilets. The dry toilet is a system that does not use water and does not contaminate the environment. It is a cyclical system since the result of the compost of organic material produces an excellent fertilizer for the garden or field. They also built wetlands that naturally filter the water in order to minimize the impact of waste water emanating from their kitchens on the natural water of the region’s underground systems.
2002: FIRST PLACE IN ECOTOURISM IN THE NATIONAwarded to the Pac-Chen community by the National Indigenous Institute (INI) and the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).
The Pac-Chen eco-tourism project, operated by Alltournative, was given the award for “Successful productive experiences in the management and conservation of the natural patrimony and indigenous culture”. It was selected out of a total of 26 participants throughout the country. The object of the competition was to recognize and publicize projects of organizations that not only protect the natural resources, but have also brought financial benefits for the community and at the same time respect or take into account the process of consolidation and participation of its organizations and its culture.
Alltournative, in association with the Pac-Chen ejido, based their project from the beginning on sustainable development and the preservation of the culture and customs. It also promotes the preservation of natural areas by not hunting or logging. The project took advantage of the natural resources such as lagoons and Cenotes and designed one of the Riviera Maya’s most attractive expeditions for groups of up to 12 people and with prior reservation.
Since the project began, there has been a significant economic influx into the community, the quality of life has improved and all the inhabitants have employment within their town.
